ACCA BT Exam Format 2026: Questions, Marks and How to Prepare

The CA Hub Editorial   •   October 3, 2026   •   6 min read

Business and Technology is usually the first ACCA exam students take, and the ACCA BT exam format is different from FA and MA. There are more questions, the marks per question vary, and Section B is split evenly across the whole syllabus. This guide sets out the format from ACCA's own syllabus and study guide, as of October 2026. It also explains a transition rule that makes BT more urgent than it looks.

The ACCA BT Exam Format

  • Duration: two hours, computer-based, available on demand.
  • Section A: 46 objective test questions: 30 worth 2 marks and 16 worth 1 mark (76 marks).
  • Section B: six multi-task questions worth 4 marks each (24 marks), one for each of the six main syllabus areas.
  • Total: 100 marks. Pass mark: 50%.

Section B tasks are computer-marked like Section A, so there is no essay writing in BT. What changes is the structure: each MTQ is a short scenario with several linked tasks from one syllabus area.

The Six Syllabus Areas

ACCA groups BT into six capabilities:

  • A. The purpose and types of businesses, and how they interact with stakeholders and the external environment (economic, political, legal and other factors).
  • B. Organisational structure, culture, corporate governance and sustainability.
  • C. Accounting and finance functions, and the regulations, systems, controls and technologies that affect them.
  • D. Leadership, and how teams and individuals are managed, motivated and developed.
  • E. Personal effectiveness and communication.
  • F. Professional ethics and professional values.

Because each area gets one 4-mark MTQ, there is no safe area to skip. A gap anywhere costs you in both sections.

Why BT Is Not "Just Theory"

BT has the highest pass rate of the Applied Knowledge exams: 89% in ACCA's June 2026 results. That makes some students underprepare. The trap is that BT questions often test precise distinctions: two motivation theories that sound alike, or the difference between a control and an audit. If you only read the text once, the options all look plausible.

Study BT the way you would study a technical paper: learn the models by name, know who proposed them, and be able to apply them to a short scenario.

How to Prepare for BT

  • Make a theories list. Leadership, motivation, team development, culture and the economic models are full of named frameworks. Keep a one-page list with a single line on what each says.
  • Learn the governance and ethics vocabulary exactly. Terms such as agency, non-executive directors, the fundamental ethical principles and threats to them come up repeatedly.
  • Do not neglect the economics. Area A includes elasticity, market structures and macroeconomic policy. Students without an economics background should give it extra time.
  • Practise the 1-mark questions fast. With 46 questions in Section A, you cannot spend three minutes on a 1-mark definition.

Our ACCA BT MCQ bank is grouped by chapter, which suits BT well: you can drill one area until the frameworks stick, then mix them with the timed tests on the BT practice page.

Time Plan for Exam Day

With 120 minutes for 100 marks, a workable split is about 90 minutes for Section A and 30 minutes for Section B, which is 5 minutes per MTQ. Spend less than a minute on 1-mark recall questions so you have room for the 2-mark ones. There is no negative marking, so answer every question.

Common BT Mistakes

  • Reading the scenario before the question. In Section B, read each task first, then look for the part of the scenario it needs. It saves time across six MTQs.
  • Mixing up similar frameworks. Two motivation theories, two leadership styles, two types of control. If you cannot say how they differ in one sentence, you do not know them well enough yet.
  • Missing "not" and "which two" in the wording. Multiple-response questions only award marks when every correct option is chosen.
  • Leaving ethics until the end. Area F has its own MTQ, and ethics questions are easy marks if you know the fundamental principles and the threats to them.

The Transition Rule That Makes BT Urgent

ACCA is introducing a redesigned qualification from mid-2027. Its transition guidance for Applied Knowledge students says:

  • FA and MA have exam equivalents in the new Knowledge level (K1 and K2).
  • BT does not. If you have not passed BT before transition, you will need to complete the Responsible Business Management Essential Employability Module instead.
  • ACCA says that module will be chargeable (price to be confirmed in January 2027) and is expected to take about 60 hours.
  • Students who have not passed BT but have completed the Foundations in Professionalism module will receive credit for the first 12 units of that module.
  • To gain the current ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business, ACCA says you need FA, MA and BT plus FiP completed by mid-July 2027 (exact dates to be confirmed).

The practical takeaway: if you have BT outstanding, sit it before the transition. As of October 2026, confirm the final dates on accaglobal.com.
