How to Pass ACCA MA: A Practical Plan for Management Accounting

The CA Hub Editorial   •   October 3, 2026   •   7 min read

If you are asking how to pass ACCA MA, start with an uncomfortable fact: of the three Applied Knowledge exams, Management Accounting has had the lowest pass rate in every result ACCA has published since at least June 2022. In June 2026 it was 65%, against 71% for FA and 89% for BT. The reason is not mystery content. MA is a calculation paper. You pass by doing the calculations quickly and correctly under time pressure, and that is a skill you build with practice, not reading.

The ACCA MA Exam Format

From ACCA's MA syllabus and study guide, as of October 2026:

  • A two-hour computer-based exam, available on demand.
  • Section A: 35 objective test questions worth 2 marks each (70 marks).
  • Section B: three multi-task questions worth 10 marks each (30 marks). Each one examines budgeting, standard costing or performance measurement.
  • Pass mark: 50%.

ACCA adds that budgeting MTQs can include tasks from analytical techniques in budgeting and forecasting, and that spreadsheets can appear in any MTQ, either as the way the scenario is presented or as a task.

The Six Syllabus Areas

  • A. The nature, source and purpose of management information
  • B. Data analysis and statistical techniques (including forecasting and spreadsheets)
  • C. Cost accounting techniques (materials, labour, overheads, absorption and marginal costing, job, batch and process costing, alternative cost principles)
  • D. Budgeting
  • E. Standard costing and variance analysis
  • F. Performance measurement

Look at that list next to the Section B rule. Areas D, E and F carry a guaranteed 30 marks in Section B and can also appear in Section A. They deserve more than a third of your study time.

Step 1: Master Variances Early

Standard costing is where most MA students lose the plot, because the variances look alike and the signs (favourable or adverse) are easy to flip. Learn each variance as a comparison: what actual cost should have been for actual activity, against what it was. Then practise until you can produce material price and usage, labour rate and efficiency, variable overhead, fixed overhead and sales variances without looking anything up.

Write a one-line rule for each, and check every answer for whether it is favourable or adverse. A correct number with the wrong label is a wrong answer.

Step 2: Get Budgeting Mechanics Automatic

Budget questions reward a methodical approach: production budget from sales and inventory changes, then materials usage and purchases, then labour. Flexible budgets and the difference between fixed and flexed figures come up repeatedly. Practise a full chain several times so the sequence becomes a habit.

Step 3: Know Your Performance Measures

Performance measurement is the third guaranteed MTQ area. Know the financial ratios (profitability, liquidity, efficiency), how return on investment and residual income are calculated, and the non-financial side, such as the balanced scorecard idea of looking beyond profit. Expect to calculate and then pick the correct interpretation.

Step 4: Do Not Ignore Area C

Cost accounting techniques make up a large share of Section A. Absorption versus marginal costing profit reconciliations, overhead absorption rates, process costing with losses, and the EOQ model are all fair OT territory. These are short calculations, which makes them perfect for daily MCQ drills.

Our ACCA MA MCQ bank is split by chapter, so you can target one technique at a time. When a chapter feels solid, switch to mixed timed quizzes on the MA practice page.

Step 5: Calculator and Number-Entry Discipline

Many MA questions are number entry, so there are no options to check your answer against. A few habits save marks:

  • Write the formula first, then put the numbers in.
  • Check the period. Monthly, quarterly and annual figures mixed together cause a lot of wrong answers.
  • Keep full precision and round only at the end, as the question instructs.
  • Ask whether the answer is sensible. A labour variance bigger than the total labour cost is a sign to recheck.

Time Plan for Exam Day

120 minutes for 100 marks gives about 1.2 minutes per mark:

  • Section A: about 84 minutes for 35 questions.
  • Section B: about 12 minutes for each 10-mark MTQ, 36 minutes in total.

Flag any OT question that takes more than three minutes and return to it at the end. There is no negative marking, so answer everything.

A Five-Week MA Plan

  • Week 1: Areas A and B. Management information, sampling, forecasting, index numbers, spreadsheets.
  • Week 2: Area C. Cost classification, materials and labour, overheads, absorption and marginal costing, process costing.
  • Week 3: Area D. Budgets, flexible budgets, budgetary control.
  • Week 4: Areas E and F. Variances and performance measurement.
  • Week 5: Timed mocks on ACCA's CBE Practice Platform, then targeted repair on the weakest area.

If you come from Pakistan's CA route, much of this overlaps with CAF-5. Our CAF-5 guide covers the same techniques at greater depth.

Plan Around the Transition

ACCA's redesigned qualification arrives from mid-2027. ACCA's transition guidance says MA has an exam equivalent, K2 Management Accounting, so a pass carries over. As of October 2026, confirm the dates on accaglobal.com before planning your final sittings.

FAQs

Is ACCA MA harder than FA?
By ACCA's published pass rates, yes: MA has trailed FA in every June and December result from June 2022 to June 2026. That reflects the calculation load more than difficult concepts.

How many questions are in ACCA MA?
38: 35 two-mark OT questions and three 10-mark MTQs.

What topics are always in Section B?
Budgeting, standard costing and performance measurement, one MTQ each.

How long should I study for MA?
It depends on your background. Commerce graduates often need less time than students new to costing. Base your plan on mock scores, not the calendar.
