ACCA in UAE and Dubai: How the Qualification Works for Students in the Emirates
The CA Hub Editorial • October 3, 2026 • 6 min read
Many students looking into ACCA in UAE are already working in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah and want a qualification they can fit around a full-time job. ACCA suits that well, and the UAE adds one benefit most countries do not: a local designation that comes with ACCA membership. Here is how it works, based on ACCA's own pages, as of October 2026.
The ACCA-AAA Partnership and UAECA
ACCA has a long-term strategic partnership with the Accountants and Auditors Association (AAA), the UAE's local accountancy body. Under it, the UAE's national chartered accountant qualification, the United Arab Emirates Chartered Accountant Qualification (UAECA), uses the ACCA Qualification as its basis.
What ACCA says this means for you:
- Once you become an ACCA member, you are eligible to apply for AAA membership at no extra cost, and can use both ACCA and UAECA after your name.
- Students do no additional work for the national qualification. You keep paying ACCA's normal subscription and exam fees.
- Since December 2014, ACCA exams in the UAE run under a Joint Examination Scheme (JES) with AAA, so they are co-branded. ACCA states the syllabus, structure, delivery and content are unchanged.
The Qualification Structure
The UAE route is the standard ACCA Qualification:
- Applied Knowledge: Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA) and Financial Accounting (FA). Two-hour computer-based exams, available on demand.
- Applied Skills: Corporate and Business Law (LW, also on demand), Taxation, Financial Reporting, Performance Management, Financial Management, and Audit and Assurance.
- Strategic Professional: Strategic Business Leader and Strategic Business Reporting, plus two Options.
- Ethics and Professional Skills Module, and 36 months of supervised practical experience (PER).
The pass mark is 50% for every exam. ACCA's progression rules say you take the levels in order (Applied Knowledge, then Applied Skills, then Strategic Professional), but you can sit the exams within a level in any order.
Exam Timing for Working Students
Session exams run four times a year, in March, June, September and December. ACCA allows a maximum of four exams per session. The on-demand exams (BT, MA, FA and LW) can be booked whenever you are ready, which suits UAE work patterns such as year-end close and audit busy season.
A practical approach many working students use: take one on-demand Applied Knowledge exam in a quieter work month, then move to one or two session exams at a time once you reach Applied Skills.
Practical Experience in the UAE
The PER is where UAE-based students often have an advantage, because they are already in finance roles. ACCA requires 36 months in a relevant accounting or finance role, verified by a practical experience supervisor, and nine performance objectives: all five Essentials plus four Technical objectives. Record it in MyACCA as you go rather than trying to reconstruct three years at the end.
Exemptions for UAE Students
Graduates of accounting and finance degrees, and holders of other professional qualifications, may get exemptions from up to nine exams (Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills). ACCA never exempts Strategic Professional exams. Your exact list comes from ACCA's exemptions calculator, and you pay a fee for each exemption you accept. Our ACCA exemptions guide explains how to decide which exemptions to take.
Getting Help Locally
ACCA lists a UAE office in Dubai Knowledge Park, with a toll-free number for students calling from within the UAE on its contact page. ACCA's directory also lists registered learning partners in Dubai if you want classroom tuition. Fees are set in ACCA's Middle East fee schedule, so check the current UAE figures on accaglobal.com before budgeting.
A Sample Route for a Working Student
Here is one way a full-time employee in Dubai with no exemptions might order the first year:
- First quarter: BT, on demand, booked in a quieter month at work.
- Second quarter: FA, on demand. If your job involves bookkeeping or reporting, this is a natural next step.
- Third quarter: MA, on demand. Give it more time than the other two; it has had the lowest Applied Knowledge pass rate in ACCA's recent results.
- Fourth quarter: LW (also on demand), then the first Applied Skills session exam.
Adjust the order around your busy season, but keep BT early because of the transition rule below. If you start now, the later steps fall after July 2027, when the exams move to the redesigned structure and new names, so check how your passes map across.
Plan Around the 2027 Transition
ACCA's redesigned qualification arrives from mid-2027. Key points from ACCA's transition guidance:
- June 2027 is the final sitting of the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams.
- FA and MA have direct equivalents in the new Knowledge level. BT does not. If BT is outstanding at transition, you will need to complete a chargeable Essential Employability Module of about 60 hours instead.
- Existing passes receive credit for equivalent elements.
If you are starting now, aim to finish BT before July 2027. As of October 2026, confirm dates on accaglobal.com.
Start With Applied Knowledge
The on-demand exams are where most UAE students begin. Practise for free with our BT, MA and FA question banks, or go to the ACCA hub. Applied Skills banks are live too: LW, PM, FR, AA and FM, plus a daily ACCA challenge. For format details, read our guides to the BT exam and FA exam tips.
FAQs
Is ACCA recognised in the UAE?
Yes. ACCA's partnership with the AAA makes the ACCA Qualification the basis of the UAE's national UAECA qualification, and ACCA members can apply for AAA membership at no extra cost.
Do I need to do extra exams for UAECA?
No. ACCA says students do not need to do any additional work and pay no additional fees.
Can I sit ACCA exams in Dubai?
Yes. ACCA exams in the UAE run under the Joint Examination Scheme with AAA, with the same syllabus and structure as elsewhere.
How long does ACCA take while working?
It depends on exemptions and pace. The 13 exams can be spread across four sessions a year, plus on-demand Applied Knowledge exams, and the 36-month PER runs alongside.
