CA vs ACCA in India: Structure, Recognition and Which One to Choose
The CA Hub Editorial • October 3, 2026 • 8 min read
The CA vs ACCA in India question is often answered with salary claims and marketing slogans. Neither helps much, because the two qualifications are built for different jobs. This comparison uses ICAI's and ACCA's own published rules, as of October 2026, so you can choose based on where you want to work, not on who advertises loudest.
The Most Important Difference: Audit Rights in India
Start here, because it settles the question for many students. Under Section 141 of India's Companies Act, 2013, a person is eligible to be appointed as auditor of a company only if they are a chartered accountant, meaning a member of ICAI under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949. If you want to sign statutory audit reports of Indian companies, or run a CA practice in India, you need the ICAI qualification. ACCA does not give you that right in India.
If your goal is industry finance, a multinational's shared service centre, or working abroad, the picture is different, and ACCA becomes a serious option.
CA (ICAI) Structure
- Foundation: four papers (Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude, Business Economics). Papers 3 and 4 are objective MCQ papers with negative marking.
- Direct entry: commerce graduates or postgraduates with at least 55%, or other graduates with at least 60%, can register directly for Intermediate (ICAI FAQs).
- Intermediate: six papers in two groups, including Advanced Accounting, Taxation, Cost and Management Accounting, and Auditing and Ethics.
- Practical training: two years, which you can start after passing both Intermediate groups and completing ICITSS.
- Final: six papers. Each has 30% case-based MCQs and 70% descriptive questions. Final also needs Advanced ICITSS and four Self-Paced Online Modules.
- Pass rule: 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate, at one sitting.
- Exam frequency: Foundation and Intermediate three times a year (January, May, September). ICAI announced on 6 April 2026 that CA Final moves to twice a year, in May and November, from the May 2026 exams.
ACCA Structure
- Applied Knowledge: Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), Financial Accounting (FA). These are two-hour, on-demand computer-based exams.
- Applied Skills: six exams (LW, TX, FR, PM, FM, AA).
- Strategic Professional: two Essentials (SBL and SBR) plus two of four Options. That makes 13 exams in total.
- Ethics and Professional Skills Module and 36 months of practical experience (PER), with nine performance objectives signed off by a supervisor.
- Pass mark: 50% per exam.
- Sessions: March, June, September and December, with Applied Knowledge and LW also available on demand.
The key structural difference: ICAI's training is a formal articleship. ACCA's PER is supervised experience you can build in a much wider range of finance roles, which suits students who need to earn while they study.
Exemptions Between the Two
ACCA can award exemptions from a maximum of nine exams: the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels. It never exempts Strategic Professional exams, so every route ends with at least four ACCA exams. You pay a fee for each exemption you accept. Your exact list depends on what you have passed, and ACCA's exemptions calculator on accaglobal.com gives the official answer. Coaching sites quote different numbers for CA Intermediate students, so check the calculator yourself. More in our ACCA exemptions guide.
Difficulty and Pace
Both are demanding. They are hard in different ways:
- CA combines the 40%-per-paper and 50%-aggregate rule, long descriptive papers, and India-specific tax and law. With CA Final now twice a year, a failed Final attempt costs you about six months.
- ACCA passes papers one at a time at 50%, and the four sessions a year make recovery from a fail quicker. Applied Knowledge pass rates are high (BT 89%, FA 71%, MA 65% in June 2026), but Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams pass far fewer candidates; Performance Management was 41% in the same release.
Both Bodies Are Changing in 2026-27
- ICAI: CA Final moved to May and November sittings from May 2026.
- ACCA: a redesigned qualification arrives from mid-2027, with Knowledge, Expertise and Strategic Professional levels. ACCA says existing passes will get credit for equivalent elements. The June 2027 session is the last for the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams.

So Which Should You Choose?
- Choose CA if you want statutory audit, taxation practice or a CA firm career in India, or the Indian Big 4 articleship pipeline.
- Choose ACCA if you want to work in multinational finance functions or abroad, need flexible experience instead of articleship, or want exams spread across the year.
- Consider both, in sequence if you are already an ICAI member and want international mobility: ACCA's exemptions make that route shorter.
