CA vs ACCA in Pakistan: An Honest Comparison for 2026

The CA Hub Editorial   •   October 3, 2026   •   8 min read

"Should I do CA or ACCA?" I get this question more than any other. The CA vs ACCA in Pakistan debate is usually settled with marketing claims: one is "easier," the other "more respected." Neither framing helps you decide. Both are serious professional qualifications with a 50% pass mark per paper. The useful differences are in structure, training, where each one is strongest, and what happens if you switch between them. Here is a comparison built from ICAP's and ACCA's own published rules, as of October 2026.

The Structure Side by Side

CA Pakistan (ICAP, Education and Training Scheme 2025):

  • PRC: three computer-based papers, offered six times a year, plus an English Communication Skills course.
  • CAF: eight papers in two groups, held twice a year (Spring and Autumn), with a maximum of four papers per sitting.
  • CFAP: six papers, held quarterly from Summer 2026.
  • Strategic Case Study: one open-book capstone paper with pre-seen material.
  • Hands-on courses and integrated modules: PPE, MS Office, AI and Data Analytics, Governance and Ethics.
  • Practical training: mandatory training at an ICAP-authorized training organization, with options of 2.5, 3, 3.5 or 4 years depending on your route.

ACCA:

  • Applied Knowledge: three exams (Business and Technology, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting).
  • Applied Skills: six exams (Corporate and Business Law, Taxation, Financial Reporting, Performance Management, Financial Management, Audit and Assurance).
  • Strategic Professional: two Essentials (Strategic Business Reporting, Strategic Business Leader) plus two of four Options. That makes 13 exams in total.
  • Ethics and Professional Skills module, plus a 36-month Practical Experience Requirement (PER).
  • Exam sessions: four a year, in March, June, September and December.

The big structural difference: ICAP's training is a formal, full-time contract at an authorized firm or organization, with a minimum stipend set by ICAP. ACCA's PER is recorded experience in a relevant role that you can build in a wider range of jobs. That flexibility is ACCA's biggest practical advantage for students who need to work.

Exam Frequency and Pace

Frequency affects how fast you recover from a fail. A failed CAF paper costs you six months, because CAF runs twice a year. ACCA's four sessions a year mean a failed paper can be retaken three months later. ICAP has moved in this direction too: PRC is bi-monthly and CFAP is now quarterly. The middle stage (CAF) is still the slow one.

I would not call either "easier." ACCA's flexibility makes it easier to schedule. ICAP's CAF and CFAP papers are long, written, Pakistan-specific (local tax and corporate law), and graded hard. You have to choose which kind of difficulty suits you.

Where Each Qualification Is Strongest

  • Choose CA if you want a career in audit, tax or advisory in Pakistan, want the structured Big 4 articleship pipeline, or want to sign audit reports in Pakistan one day. ICAP's syllabus is built around Pakistani tax and corporate law, and the local market knows the CA designation well.
  • Choose ACCA if you are fairly sure you will work abroad or for a multinational's finance function, need to earn while studying, or want to build your experience outside an audit firm.
  • Be wary of picking either because a relative says it is "better." Ask yourself where you want to be working in seven years and work backwards.

Switching from ACCA to CA: ICAP's Exemptions

Under ICAP's 2025 scheme, a person who has passed all papers of ACCA (UK) is exempt from:

  • All papers of PRC;
  • CAF-1 Financial Accounting and Reporting;
  • CAF-5 Management Accounting;
  • CAF-6 Corporate Reporting; and
  • CAF-8 Audit and Assurance Essentials, but only where Advanced Audit and Assurance has been passed.

That leaves CAF-2 Taxation, CAF-3 Data, Systems and Risks, CAF-4 Business Law Dynamics and CAF-7 Business Insights and Analysis (plus CAF-8 if you did not take AAA), then CFAP, the Strategic Case Study and training. The two Pakistan-heavy papers, CAF-2 Tax and CAF-4 Law, are where ACCA affiliates usually need the most work. ICAP's exemption fee for ACCA-qualified candidates is Rs. 22,200 for three papers or Rs. 29,600 for four (as of October 2026). Note that the exemption applies to people who have passed all ACCA papers. More detail is in our ICAP exemptions guide.

Switching from CA to ACCA

ACCA can award exemptions from a maximum of nine exams, the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels. It does not award exemptions from any Strategic Professional exam, so every route into ACCA ends with at least four exams. You pay an exemption fee for each exam exempted.

ICAP qualifications are assessed by ACCA's exemptions calculator on accaglobal.com, which tells you the exact papers you would be exempt from based on what you have passed. Tuition providers often quote specific numbers for CAF-qualified students. Run the calculator yourself with your actual result before relying on any of them, because the outcome depends on the stage and papers you have cleared.

Can You Do Both?

Some students hold both. If you go that way, sequence it carefully. The overlap between the two syllabi is real at the knowledge level (financial reporting, audit, management accounting), which is exactly where the exemptions sit. Doing both at the same time usually means doing neither well. Pick a primary qualification, finish a stage, then decide whether the second credential adds anything for the job you want.

We cover both paths on this site: start with the exam hub, or go straight to the ACCA page. If you are on the CA route, the practice hub has free MCQs for every PRC and CAF paper.

All PRC papers plus CAF-1, CAF-5 and CAF-6, and CAF-8 if Advanced Audit and Assurance was passed, under the 2025 scheme. Confirm on icap.org.pk.

What is the pass mark in ACCA and ICAP?
50% in both, per paper.

Can CA students get ACCA exemptions?
Yes, up to the nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams, depending on what you have passed. No Strategic Professional exams can be exempted. Use ACCA's exemptions calculator for your exact list.
