The ICAP Exemptions Policy 2025: Do You Have to Take Every Paper?

The Reality of Exemptions
Earning an exemption from an ICAP paper sounds like finding a cheat code to the qualification. However, the Institute guards its standards fiercely. Under the Education Scheme 2025, the exemption policy is highly structured. You cannot claim an exemption simply because the name of your university course matches an ICAP paper.
The Science of Syllabus Matching
The core philosophy driving ICAP's exemption policy is the 70% rule. For ICAP to grant you an exemption from a CAF or PRC paper, your prior qualification’s learning outcomes and syllabus depth must map at least 70% to the ICAP equivalent. Furthermore, the level of assessment in your prior degree must equal or exceed ICAP's rigorous standards.
Additionally, you must secure a high baseline grade in the paper you wish to transfer—typically a secure 60% to 75% in your prior qualification, depending on the tier of the institution.
How It Affects Specific Pathways
- A-Level Exceptional Performers: Top-tier A-level students often automatically bypass the Qualifying Assessment Test. In specific cases, exceptional grades in subjects like Economics can trigger exemptions in the correlated PRC papers.
- ACCA Affiliates: ACCA members and affiliates enjoy some of the most robust exemption pathways. Typically, a fully qualified ACCA affiliate can secure exemptions for the entirety of the PRC stage and potentially up to four or five major CAF papers (such as Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, and Audit), fast-tracking them directly into advanced CAF or early articleship.
- 16-Year Degree Holders: The scale of exemptions relies heavily on your university's ranking. Graduates from highly ranked, HEC W-category business programs often witness substantial PRC and CAF waivers, reducing their path to CFAP by over a year.
The Catch
There is no "result awaiting" exemption. You must formally apply with finalized transcripts and pay the requisite exemption fees. Furthermore, exemptions for specific, specialized hands-on modules (like MS Office or PPE) may only be bypassed if proof of equivalent formalized hands-on application exists.
Exemptions are a privilege, not a right. If you qualify, use the saved time to aggressively master the papers you still have to take.
