CIMA BA1 Tips: How to Pass Fundamentals of Business Economics
The CA Hub Editorial • October 3, 2026 • 6 min read
BA1, Fundamentals of Business Economics, is the first paper of CIMA's Certificate in Business Accounting, and for many students it is their first professional exam. These CIMA BA1 tips start with the format and weightings from CIMA's own BA1 study and exam guide, then cover how to prepare. Everything below is as of October 2026.
The BA1 Exam Format
- Duration: two hours.
- Questions: 60 compulsory objective test questions.
- Question styles: multiple choice, multiple response, number entry, hotspot and drag and drop.
- Delivery: computer-based, booked through Pearson VUE, either at a test centre or online.
- Results: a provisional pass or fail when you finish, with the final result on MyCIMA within 48 hours.
The Pass Mark: A Scaled Score
CIMA reports Certificate objective tests as a scaled score between 0 and 150. A score of 100 or above is a pass. CIMA uses scaled scores because there are multiple versions of each test, and scaling keeps the standard the same across versions. Do not convert the 100 into a fixed percentage of questions you must get right. The useful target is simple: be comfortably above the standard across every syllabus area.
Your results also include feedback by syllabus area. If you pass but are marked "not proficient" in an area, take note: CIMA's results guide says the overall grade is based on overall performance, so a pass can hide a weak area.
Syllabus Weightings
From CIMA's BA1 study and exam guide:
- A. Macroeconomic and institutional context of business: 25%
- B. Microeconomic and organisational context of business: 30%
- C. Informational context of business: 20%
- D. Financial context of business: 25%
CIMA says all syllabus topics will be examined, so the weightings tell you where to spend time, not what to skip.
Tip 1: Start With Microeconomics
Area B is the largest at 30%. It covers how markets and organisations work: demand and supply, elasticity, costs, market structures and the goals of different organisations. It also gives you the vocabulary for the rest of the paper. Build it first.
Tip 2: Do Not Treat Area C as an Afterthought
CIMA describes BA1 as covering not only the economic context of business but also "the information available to assist management in evaluating and forecasting the behaviour of consumers, markets and the economy," along with the numerical techniques that support those decisions. That is the informational context area (20%). Students who chose BA1 because they like economics sometimes neglect the numbers, and it shows. Practise the calculations with the calculator you will use on the day.
Tip 3: Learn Macro Through Policy
CIMA's guide uses this area's lead outcome as its example: explain the principal factors that affect a country's national income, and the impact of changing growth rates and prices on business. The component outcome covers equilibrium national income, growth, inflation, unemployment, and trade deficits and surpluses, using aggregate demand and supply and the circular flow of income. It is easier to remember if you link every concept to a policy lever: what happens to output, inflation and unemployment when a government changes spending or taxes, or a central bank changes interest rates. Draw the chain of cause and effect for each one.
Tip 4: Read the Verbs in the Learning Outcomes
CIMA's syllabus uses a verb hierarchy. "Define" and "list" are knowledge-level verbs. "Explain", "distinguish" and "identify" are comprehension-level. "Calculate", "apply" and "prepare" are application-level. When a learning outcome says "calculate", expect a number-entry question, not a definition. Use the verbs to decide how deeply to study each topic.
Tip 5: Know Financial Markets and Institutions
The financial context area (25%) deals with how the behaviour of financial markets affects organisations. Much of it is about definitions and relationships, which suits flashcards and short daily quizzes.
Tip 6: Use CIMA's Own Practice Material
CIMA's BA1 study and exam guide points you to a question tutorial showing the question types and how the on-screen functions work, plus sample BA1 questions for each syllabus topic. Do these before exam day so the software does not slow you down. The CGMA Study Hub also sets out a BA1 study plan of around 127 hours over nine weeks, which is a useful planning benchmark if you are new to the subject.
Tip 7: Manage Two Hours for Sixty Questions
That is two minutes per question. Some definitions take 20 seconds, and some data questions take four minutes. Make a first pass answering everything you are sure of, flag the slow ones, and come back. Do not leave any question unanswered.
Calculators
CIMA lets you take a non-programmable calculator from its pre-approved list. You do not have to bring one, because an on-screen calculator is also available. If you bring your own, check it against CIMA's calculator guidance before exam day.
