ICAP Passing Marks 2026: The Exam Rules for PRC, CAF and CFAP
The CA Hub Editorial • October 3, 2026 • 7 min read
The single most searched question about CA in Pakistan is some version of "what are the ICAP passing marks?" The short answer: under the Education and Training Scheme 2025 you need at least 50% marks in each paper. The longer answer matters more, because the rules around that 50% (time limits, group restrictions, how many papers you can sit, how often exams happen) decide how fast you actually progress. This guide pulls the official rules for PRC, CAF, CFAP and the Strategic Case Study into one place. Rules here are as of October 2026; confirm on icap.org.pk before you plan a session around them.
The 50% Rule, Paper by Paper
ICAP's passing standard is 50% in each subject. Each paper is judged on its own. ICAP's FAQs on the 2025 scheme spell this out for PRC-3 Business and Economic Insights, which combines two areas: it is a single 120-minute paper carrying 100 marks, the business and economics marks are added together, and you need at least 50% overall. You do not have to pass each component separately.
Two practical consequences follow:
- A 49 is a fail. There is no rounding up to save you. Treat 60% as your working target so that one bad question does not sink the paper.
- Every topic can carry marks. The CAF syllabus caps how much any single topic can be worth: testing level 1 topics carry at most 8 marks each (and 35 marks combined in one attempt), level 2 topics up to 20 marks, and level 3 topics up to 25 marks. A brand-new topic is tested at level 1 in its first attempt. Skipping a T2 or T3 topic is gambling with up to a quarter of the paper.
PRC Rules: Bi-Monthly, Computer-Based, 15 Months
The Pre-Requisite Competencies stage has three papers: PRC-1 Fundamentals of Accounting, PRC-2 Quantitative Analysis for Business and PRC-3 Business and Economic Insights. Business writing is no longer a written exam; it has been replaced by an English Communication Skills course assessed by the British Council.
- Format: PRC assessments are computer-based, run on ICAP's common online testing system.
- Frequency: six times a year, in January, March, May, July, September and November.
- Time limit: you must clear all PRC papers within 15 months from the month of your first PRC attempt. This is the rule that catches people. The clock starts with your first attempt, not with registration, so do not book a paper "just to see what it is like."
- QAT: if your HSSC or A-Level aggregate is between 50% and 60%, you must pass the Qualifying Assessment Test first. You get a maximum of three attempts, and once you pass you must register for PRC within twelve months. QAT is offered in March, June, September, November and December.
ICAP's PRC assessment FAQs also make two marking points worth knowing: in multiple-response questions marks are awarded only for a completely correct answer, and in fill-in-the-blank questions a spelling mistake or synonym counts as wrong. Precision matters even in an objective paper. That is exactly why we built the PRC question banks around exam-style options rather than easy recall.
CAF Rules: Groups, Sittings and the Four-Paper Cap
CAF has eight papers split into two groups:
- Group A: CAF-1 Financial Accounting and Reporting, CAF-2 Taxation Principles and Compliance, CAF-3 Data, Systems and Risks, CAF-4 Business Law Dynamics.
- Group B: CAF-5 Management Accounting, CAF-6 Corporate Reporting, CAF-7 Business Insights and Analysis, CAF-8 Audit and Assurance Essentials.
The rules that shape your plan:
- Maximum four papers per sitting. There is no minimum, so you can sit one paper if you want to.
- Group B unlocks after two Group A passes. You can appear in Group B papers once you have passed two papers of Group A. Your first CAF session should therefore be built around Group A.
- Two sessions a year. CAF exams are held semi-annually, in Spring and Autumn. Missing a session costs you six months, not two.
- Time limit: ICAP's Scheme 2025 principles document sets a five-year window from your first CAF attempt, with an extra year if no more than two papers remain. The scheme FAQs show different treatment for some existing examinees. Check which applies to you on icap.org.pk.
With a four-paper cap and two sessions a year, the fastest realistic CAF route is two sittings. Most students take longer, and that is fine. What is not fine is sitting four papers when you are only ready for two and failing all four.
CFAP and the Strategic Case Study
- Six CFAP papers: Advanced Corporate Reporting, Corporate Laws and Governance, Sustainability Reporting and Assurance, Strategic Business Finance, Taxation Practice and Planning, and Audit, Assurance and Data.
- Quarterly exams from Summer 2026 (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter).
- Minimum two papers per attempt, unless only one paper remains.
- The four-paper benchmark: you must pass at least four CFAP papers within ten years (counted from the start of training, or from your first CFAP attempt if you sit CFAP before training). After that there is no limit.
- Trainees may appear in two examination sessions per calendar year, as approved by their training organization.
- Strategic Case Study: open to you once you have passed all CFAP papers or have only one left. It is an open-book paper with pre-seen material released 20 to 30 days before the exam, held twice a year (Summer and Winter), with no limit on attempts.

Do You Have to Copy the Study Text Word for Word?
No. ICAP's FAQs say there is no prescribed text and answers are marked on merit. The exception is technical terminology: in law, "contract" and "agreement" are not synonyms; in audit, "auditor's opinion" cannot become "auditor's judgment." Learn the vocabulary exactly and explain everything else in your own words. This is the same point I make in the examiner's mindset: the marker rewards application, not recitation.
If You Fail by a Few Marks
ICAP offers two paid routes after a result: a review of your answer script or result, and the Examinee Assessment Scheme, which gives feedback on your performance. Check the current fees on ICAP's fee schedule (we summarise them in our ICAP fee guide). A review is worth it if you were close. If you were 15 marks short, the money is better spent on another mock.

At least 50% in each CAF paper, as of October 2026. Confirm on icap.org.pk before your session.
How many CAF papers can I attempt in one sitting?

PRC six times a year, CAF twice a year (Spring and Autumn), CFAP quarterly from Summer 2026, and the Strategic Case Study twice a year.
