CA Foundation Business Economics Important Topics: Official Weightage and How to Prioritise
The CA Hub Editorial • October 3, 2026 • 7 min read
Business Economics looks friendly: no journal entries, no long calculations. Then students sit a 100-question MCQ paper where two options look right and a wrong pick costs a quarter of a mark. Knowing the CA Foundation Business Economics important topics helps, but only if your list comes from ICAI's own weightage rather than guesswork. Here is that weightage, as of October 2026, and how to use it.
The Paper 4 Exam Pattern
- 100 marks, 100 MCQs, four options each, on an OMR sheet.
- 2 hours (2 PM to 4 PM IST), with no advance reading time.
- +1 for a correct answer, minus 0.25 for a wrong one, 0 for a blank.
- Passing: at least 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate across all four Foundation papers, in one sitting.
These details come from ICAI's FAQs on the new scheme, its exam announcements for September 2026 and January 2027, and the instructions printed on the September 2025 Paper 4 booklet.

- 3. Theory of Production and Cost: 10%

- 6. Business Cycles: 5%
- 7. Public Finance: 10%

The Most Important Topics, in Order
1. Price Determination in Different Markets (15%). Perfect competition, monopoly and monopolistic competition, plus game theory applied to oligopoly. Know the equilibrium conditions for each structure in the short and long run, and be able to read cost and revenue curves. This chapter mixes theory and numbers, so it rewards practice.
2. Determination of National Income (15%). Macroeconomic aggregates (GDP, GNP, NNP and so on), the measurement methods, and the Keynesian two-, three- and four-sector models. Expect multiplier questions. Small calculation slips are common here, so practise them on paper.
3. Theory of Demand and Supply (10%). Law of demand, price, income and cross elasticity, indifference curves, supply and market equilibrium. Elasticity numericals are quick marks once you learn the formulas.
4. Theory of Production and Cost (10%). Law of variable proportions, returns to scale, producer's equilibrium and the short-run and long-run cost curves. The relationships between average, marginal and total figures are a favourite MCQ source.
5. Money Market (10%). Demand for money theories, money supply measures, monetary policy, and newer terms such as cryptocurrency, which the syllabus names explicitly.
6. Public Finance, International Trade and Indian Economy (10% each). These are largely conceptual. Public finance covers fiscal functions, market failure, the budget process and fiscal policy. International trade includes trade theories (including Krugman's intra-industry trade), trade policy instruments, negotiations, exchange rates and FDI. The Indian Economy chapter runs from the pre-1950 period through the 1950-1991 phase to the reforms of 1991 onward.
7. Introduction and Business Cycles (5% each). Small, short chapters. Easy to finish in a day each, and easy marks.
Why "Important Topics" Is Not "Only Topics"
The four highest-weight chapters (4, 5, 2 and 3) make up 50% of the paper. The remaining 50% is spread across six chapters. You cannot reach a comfortable score by skipping half the syllabus, and with negative marking, guessing on chapters you never studied is a poor trade. Use the weightage to decide order and depth, not what to leave out.
How to Study Theory for an MCQ Paper
- Learn in contrasts. Many questions ask you to tell two similar concepts apart: short run versus long run, normal profit versus supernormal profit, fiscal versus monetary policy. Make two-column tables.
- Draw the diagrams yourself. Even though you never draw in the exam, sketching demand, cost and equilibrium curves is the fastest way to understand them.
- Read the ICAI study material. MCQs often use its exact phrasing. For the September 2026 exam, ICAI listed the August 2024 edition (reprint August 2025 onward) as applicable; check the BoS notice for January 2027.
- Practise with past papers. ICAI publishes Foundation MCQ papers with answer keys and runs mock test paper series before each exam.
Time and Accuracy on the Day
You have 72 seconds per question. Theory questions should take 30 to 45 seconds, which buys time for numericals in national income, elasticity and costs. Go through the paper once answering what you are sure of, then return to the rest. Only guess when you can eliminate at least two options. Leave five minutes to check your OMR sheet.
A Six-Week Plan for January 2027
