CA Foundation Exam Pattern and Passing Marks: All Four Papers Explained
The CA Hub Editorial • October 4, 2026 • 7 min read
The CA Foundation exam has four 100-mark papers: two descriptive papers (Accounting and Business Laws) and two objective MCQ papers with negative marking (Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics). To pass, ICAI requires at least 40% in each paper and at least 50% in aggregate across all four, in a single sitting.
That aggregate rule shapes your whole strategy, so this guide explains the pattern of each paper, how the passing rule plays out in practice, and how to plan for the January 2027 exam. Details are from ICAI's scheme FAQs and exam announcements, as of October 2026; confirm on icai.org before you finalise anything.
The Four Papers at a Glance
- Paper 1, Accounting (100 marks): descriptive, three hours, written answers.
- Paper 2, Business Laws (100 marks): descriptive, three hours, written answers.
- Paper 3, Quantitative Aptitude (100 marks): objective, 100 MCQs in two hours, with negative marking. Business Mathematics 40 marks, Logical Reasoning 20 and Statistics 40.
- Paper 4, Business Economics (100 marks): objective, 100 MCQs in two hours, with negative marking.
ICAI's announcements give advance reading time only for the descriptive papers. Papers 3 and 4 have no advance reading time.
How the Passing Rule Works
You need two things at the same attempt:
- At least 40 in every paper. A 39 in any paper means you have not passed Foundation, whatever your other scores.
- At least 200 out of 400 in total. That is the 50% aggregate.
Two worked examples make this concrete:
- Scores of 45, 42, 70 and 55 total 212. Every paper is above 40 and the aggregate is above 200, so this is a pass.
- Scores of 41, 40, 60 and 52 total 193. Every paper clears 40, but the aggregate is below 200, so this is not a pass.
The lesson: aim to make one or two papers your aggregate builders. For many students that is Quantitative Aptitude or Accounting, where a well-prepared student can score well above 60. Then make sure no paper falls below 40.
Paper 1: Accounting
What It Tests
Theoretical framework and accounting standards basics, the accounting process, bank reconciliation, inventories, depreciation, bills of exchange, final accounts of sole proprietors, partnership accounts (admission, retirement, death and dissolution), not-for-profit organisations, and an introduction to company accounts. Check the current syllabus on ICAI's site for the exact chapter list.
How to Score
Accounting is marked on presentation as well as answers. Use proper formats and show workings, because step marks are available. Practise full questions in the time their marks allow. Partnership and final accounts are long, so speed comes only from repetition.
Paper 2: Business Laws
What It Tests
The Indian regulatory framework, the Indian Contract Act 1872, the Sale of Goods Act 1930, the Indian Partnership Act 1932, the Limited Liability Partnership Act 2008, the Companies Act 2013 (basic concepts) and the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881. Check the current syllabus on ICAI's site.
How to Score
Answers that follow a structure score better: state the relevant provision, apply it to the facts, then conclude. Learn the section wording for key provisions, and practise case-based questions from ICAI's Revision Test Papers and Mock Test Papers. Good handwriting and clear headings make a difference in a three-hour written paper.
Papers 3 and 4: The MCQ Papers
Both are 100 questions in 120 minutes, one mark for a correct answer and minus 0.25 for a wrong one. A blank scores zero. That changes how you should approach uncertain questions:
- If you can eliminate two of the four options, guessing between the remaining two has a positive expected value.
- If you have no idea at all, a blind guess is close to worthless and adds risk.
- Your biggest losses are not guesses but careless errors on questions you know. Check units, signs and the exact wording ("not", "except").
We cover each MCQ paper in depth in separate guides: Quantitative Aptitude preparation (with ICAI's section weightage) and Business Economics important topics (with ICAI's chapter weightage).
