CA Foundation Quantitative Aptitude Preparation: Weightage, Negative Marking and a 10-Week Plan

The CA Hub Editorial   •   October 3, 2026   •   8 min read

Paper 3 is the one CA Foundation paper where a strong student can score very high, and where a careless one can lose marks to guessing. Good CA Foundation Quantitative Aptitude preparation starts with ICAI's own rules: the pattern, the weightage and the negative marking. Everything below comes from ICAI documents (the Foundation syllabus, ICAI's FAQs and exam announcements, and the September 2025 question paper), as of October 2026.

The Paper 3 Exam Pattern

  • 100 marks, 100 MCQs, each with four options, answered on an OMR sheet.
  • Duration: 2 hours (2 PM to 4 PM IST), with no advance reading time.
  • One mark for each correct answer.
  • Negative marking: a quarter of the marks for that question is deducted for each wrong answer. Blank answers score zero. Darkening more than one circle counts as wrong.

Passing: ICAI requires at least 40% in each paper and at least 50% in the aggregate of all four papers, in one sitting. That means a 40 in QA only works if your other papers make up the aggregate. Many students use QA to pull the aggregate up.

Official Weightage

ICAI's section-wise weightage for Paper 3 (issued 26 October 2023, applicable from May 2024 until changed) splits the paper into three parts:

  • Part A, Business Mathematics: 40 marks
  • Part B, Logical Reasoning: 20 marks
  • Part C, Statistics: 40 marks

Within each part, ICAI gives ranges by section:

  • Business Mathematics: ratio and proportion, indices and logarithms, equations and linear inequalities (20%-30%); mathematics of finance, covering simple and compound interest, effective rates, present and future value, annuities, sinking funds, EMI, CAGR and NPV (30%-40%); permutations and combinations, sequences and series, sets, relations and functions, limits and continuity, and basic calculus (30%-50%).
  • Logical Reasoning: number series, coding and decoding, odd man out; direction tests; seating arrangements; blood relations (20%-30% each).
  • Statistics: data representation, sampling, central tendency and dispersion (45%-50%); probability and theoretical distributions (25%-30%); correlation and regression (10%-15%); index numbers (10%-15%).

ICAI allows a deviation of up to plus or minus 5% on these weightages. Confirm the current version on icai.org before you finalise your plan.

What the Weightage Tells You

  • Mathematics of finance is the single biggest block in Business Mathematics. It is also formula-driven and highly scoreable. Make it your first priority.
  • Central tendency and dispersion is nearly half of Statistics. Mean, median, mode, quartiles, standard deviation and coefficient of variation are quick marks once the formulas are second nature.
  • Logical Reasoning is 20 marks of pure practice. No theory to learn, just patterns. Students who drill it daily often treat it as their safest section.
  • Calculus and limits are the classic skip. ICAI puts them in a section worth 30%-50% of Business Mathematics, so skipping them is a bigger gamble than it looks.

How to Handle Negative Marking

Do the arithmetic once so you never panic about it. With four options and a quarter-mark penalty, a blind guess is worth only about +0.06 marks on average, which is close to nothing and adds risk. Rule out one option and the expected value rises to about +0.17. Rule out two and it is +0.375. A simple rule:

  • Sure: answer.
  • Eliminated two options: answer.
  • No idea at all: leave it, unless you are near the 40-mark line and need the expected value.

The bigger danger is not guessing. It is calculation slips on questions you know. A wrong answer on a question you could have solved costs you 1.25 marks compared with getting it right.

Speed: 100 Questions in 120 Minutes

You have 72 seconds per question. Two passes work well:

  • Pass 1 (about 80 minutes): answer everything you can solve in under a minute. Skip lengthy calculations.
  • Pass 2 (about 35 minutes): return to the skipped questions in order of confidence.
  • Final 5 minutes: check OMR alignment. A shifted row can wreck an otherwise good paper.

Learn to use your calculator's memory functions. Many finance questions (annuities, present value) are much faster with them.

A 10-Week Plan for January 2027

ICAI has scheduled the January 2027 Foundation exams on 3, 5, 7 and 9 January 2027. Online exam forms open on 3 November 2026, with the last date without late fee of 16 November 2026 (ICAI announcement of 23 September 2026). Starting now gives you about ten weeks:

  • Weeks 1-2: Mathematics of finance, ratio and proportion, indices and logarithms.
  • Week 3: Equations, inequalities, sequences and series.
  • Week 4: Permutations and combinations, sets, relations, functions.
  • Week 5: Limits, continuity and basic calculus.
  • Week 6: Data representation, sampling, central tendency and dispersion.
  • Week 7: Probability and theoretical distributions.
  • Week 8: Correlation, regression and index numbers.
  • Weeks 9-10: Full 100-question mocks under 2-hour conditions. ICAI's Board of Studies releases mock test papers and past MCQ papers with answer keys.

Logical Reasoning runs alongside all ten weeks: 15 to 20 questions a day.

For daily chapter-wise practice, use our free CA Foundation QA MCQ bank, and when you are ready, the timed tests on the QA practice page. The daily quiz is a good way to keep earlier chapters warm.

FAQs

How many questions are in CA Foundation Paper 3?
100 MCQs for 100 marks, in 2 hours.

Is there negative marking in CA Foundation QA?
Yes. ICAI deducts 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in the objective papers (Papers 3 and 4).

What is the passing mark?
At least 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate across all four papers, in one sitting.

Which chapters carry the most marks?
By ICAI's weightage: mathematics of finance in Business Mathematics, and central tendency and dispersion in Statistics. Logical Reasoning is a fixed 20 marks.

Is there reading time in Paper 3?
No. ICAI's announcements say Papers 3 and 4 have no advance reading time.
