US CMA for Pakistani and Indian Students: Eligibility, Cost and Career Outlook
The CA Hub Editorial • October 4, 2026 • 8 min read
Students in Pakistan and India can become a US CMA (Certified Management Accountant) by joining the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), passing a two-part exam and meeting a degree and work-experience requirement. It is a shorter, management-accounting-focused credential than CA or ACCA, and it suits people heading for corporate finance roles rather than audit practice.
This guide covers eligibility, the exam (including the 2026 change from essays to case-based questions), the costs you will face and the career outlook. We do not quote fees or salaries here, because IMA revises fees and salary data varies widely. Instead we point you to IMA's own pages. Details are as of October 2026; confirm everything on IMA's website, imaglobal.org.
Who Can Become a US CMA
IMA's requirements fall into four parts:
- IMA membership. You must be a member of IMA. Students in eligible programmes can usually join at a reduced student rate.
- Education. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, or a professional certification that IMA accepts in place of a degree. Degrees from outside the US may need to be evaluated. You can sit the exam before you finish your degree, but you need it to be certified.
- Experience. Two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management. This can come before or after the exam, within the time IMA allows.
- The exam. Pass both parts, and enrol in the CMA programme before you sit.
For Pakistani students: if your degree route is a shorter programme, check whether IMA treats it as equivalent to a bachelor's degree before you register. If you hold or are pursuing a professional qualification, check IMA's list of accepted certifications. For Indian students: the same principle applies, and many students begin during their undergraduate degree, so plan the timing of degree completion and experience together.
The CMA Exam
The Two Parts
- Part 1, Financial Planning, Performance and Analytics: external financial reporting decisions, planning, budgeting and forecasting, performance management, cost management, internal controls, and technology and analytics.
- Part 2, Strategic Financial Management: financial statement analysis, corporate finance, decision analysis, risk management, investment decisions and professional ethics.
You can take the parts in either order. IMA publishes a content specification outline for each part with topic weightings; use the current one on IMA's site when you plan.
Format and the 2026 Case-Based Question Change
Each part is a four-hour, computer-based exam: 100 multiple-choice questions in three hours, followed by a one-hour written section. You must score at least 50% on the multiple-choice section to move on to the second section.
The second section has changed. For the English exam in most regions, IMA has replaced the two essay questions with two case-based questions (CBQs). During 2026, candidates moved in stages: the January/February window was essays only, May/June let candidates choose, and from the September/October 2026 window CBQs are the standard format. Each CBQ is a short business case with linked tasks in formats such as drag and drop, multiple select, list selection and numerical entry. Preparation providers report that the content covered has not changed, only the format. Check IMA's current guidance before you book.
Testing Windows and Time Limits
The CMA exam is offered in testing windows: January-February, May-June and September-October. Exams are delivered by Prometric, which has test centres in both Pakistan and India; check availability for your city when you schedule. IMA's rules also set time limits, including how long you have to pass the second part once you pass the first, and a deadline for completing the experience and education requirements. Read IMA's current candidate handbook so you do not lose a passed part.
What the CMA Costs
The costs come from several places. IMA publishes its own fees, and tuition is priced by providers. Expect to pay for:
- IMA membership (annual), with student and professional rates.
- A CMA programme entrance fee (one-off), which covers a fixed period in which to complete the programme.
- An exam fee for each part, payable again if you re-sit a part.
- Review materials or coaching, which vary greatly in price.
- Currency conversion. IMA charges in US dollars, so your bank's exchange rate and card charges add to the total.
Check IMA's fee page for current figures and any student discounts before budgeting. A rough sense of the total in rupees can be worked out from IMA's dollar fees and the exchange rate on the day you pay.
Career and Salary Outlook
The CMA is designed for management accountants and finance professionals inside businesses: budgeting, planning, cost management, performance analysis and decision support. That makes it relevant to roles such as financial analyst, FP&A analyst, cost or management accountant, and finance business partner, especially in multinational companies and shared service centres in India, Pakistan and the Gulf.
What the CMA does not do is give you audit-signing rights. In India, only ICAI members can be appointed as company auditors under the Companies Act, 2013, and in Pakistan statutory audit is the domain of ICAP chartered accountants. If audit practice is your goal, CA is the route. See CA vs ACCA in Pakistan and CA vs ACCA in India for how those routes compare.
On pay, be sceptical of any salary figure that does not cite a source and a date. IMA publishes an annual global salary survey comparing certified and non-certified members; read the latest edition on IMA's website, and check the sample size for your country before drawing conclusions. Salary depends heavily on employer, city, experience and what else you hold, so a CMA on top of a degree and relevant experience is worth more than a CMA alone.
CMA, CA or ACCA?
- Choose the CMA if you already have a degree, want a corporate finance career, and want a credential you can complete relatively quickly alongside a job.
- Choose CA (ICAP or ICAI) if you want audit, tax practice or the Big 4 articleship pipeline at home.
- Choose ACCA if you want a full professional accountancy qualification with international mobility and flexible practical experience.
- Combine them if it fits your goal. Some CA and ACCA students add the CMA later for its management accounting and analytics focus.
How to Prepare
- Start with Part 1 or Part 2 based on your background. Accounting graduates often find Part 1's reporting and costing content familiar. Students with finance backgrounds may prefer Part 2.
- Build multiple-choice speed first. You need 50% on the MCQs just to reach the second section, and the MCQs carry most of the score. Practise with our free US CMA Part 1 and US CMA Part 2 question banks.
- Practise the case-based format. Work through short cases with several linked tasks and time yourself to about 30 minutes per case.
- Keep a daily habit with the daily US CMA challenge, and explore all options from the US CMA hub.
- For unlimited timed mocks, Pro adds full exam simulations and an AI tutor that explains every answer.
